| Syracuse Syracuse was an important city in ancient times, particularly when the fate of the Mediterranean was being fought over by Athens, Carthage and Rome; before Rome finally prevailed. It is now a modern city partly on the island of Ortigia and partly on the mainland. There are many famous monuments and ruins of the past, that make the city quite unique. It is also an attractive seaside resort, with fine reefs and beaches extending north and south of the city itself. With these goes a particularly mild climate (sea-bathing almost all round the year); the combination makes for a fine holiday, one of the best Sicily has to offer.
